Inclement / Cold Weather Policy
Cold Weather Policy
Our school policy for keeping students indoors is consistent with all other Elementary Rocky View Schools in Airdrie. When the temperature is -20, WITH windchill or humidity, we open the doors in the mornings to let the children in or will keep them in during recess. In determining the temperatures we use the Meadowbrook Weather Station here in Airdrie and information from the Calgary Airport.
If parents are dropping children off on a morning when they would prefer they be inside, our Breakfast Program is will continue to be an alternative. The front doors open at 7:15 every morning and many families use this before school care service even when their children have eaten breakfast at home. All children are welcome.
Inclement Weather:
School Closure Procedures Due to Weather:
1. When snow conditions make roads impassable, and/or when the wind chill factor becomes extreme, school closure discussions will be initiated by Airdrie Principal, Dan Hoch.
School closure decisions will be made based on the following factors:
a) Blizzard or whiteout conditions exist throughout the area.
b) All school buses, both urban and rural are cancelled by the bus contractor.
c) Severe sustained temperature or wind chill factors exist.
Closure procedures due to weather will only be initiated before conveying students to school in the morning has begun. Once students are being conveyed to school, school will not be closed because of weather conditions until regular dismissal time.
2. If the decision to close schools due to weather is made, then all Public and Catholic schools in Airdrie will be closed.
3. Principal John Murphy from Nose Creek will determine the severity of the weather conditions by consulting, when necessary, with the weather office, designated weather spotters, and other school administrators. He may also communicate with Sue Wilkie of Cardinal Coach Lines to determine if reports from bus drivers indicate that road and weather conditions are hazardous causing cancellation of bus service.
Assistant Principal Dave Smith, Trustee Sylvia Eggerer and John Murphy will then consult and make a decision on closure. The decision to close schools should be finalized by 5:30 a.m.
Decisions to close school because of inclement weather or other emergencies will be announced on radio stations, CBC Radio, CHFM Lite 96, 66 CFR, JACK FM, QR 77, Q 107, Country 105, CKMX 1060, CJAY 92 as well as CITY TV, The Range (Airdrie) and Global News Morning Edition. This information will also be posted on the Rocky View Web Site and available by telephoning the Rocky View Transportation information line (403-250-0016).
